"essence"
In November and December 2004 an essence course was run at the Church. Although there are at present no plans to repeat this, the information below is retained for those who may have heard of it and wish to get some idea of its content and intent .......
essence is designed for all who recognise they are on a spiritual journey and who have a desire to travel further on that journey. Written from a Christian perspective, the programme aims to encourage all fellow travellers on their pilgrimage, both within and outside the church community. Our hope is that all who participate will deepen their spiritual life and come to a richer understanding of the God whose glory is revealed in a woman or man who is fully alive.
essence aims to give an experiential introduction to the Christian faith in a culturally relevant way. Each session takes participants on a journey of self-discovery as they investigate Christian perspectives through different activities. The overall objective is to encourage all of the group members to make a personal journey towards God. This practical approach encourages individual participation. The series takes popular concepts from New Age spirituality and refocuses them from a Christian perspective.
'Gentle, interactive, clear, creative, helpful and involving - essence is a remarkable resource. It begins where people are on their spiritual journey, and helps them engage with a God who is at work in their lives and in the world. It affirms and explores spiritual interest, and it introduces the touch of the gospel - offering people a new encounter with God, as well as a new understanding of God. essence is a major and significant evangelistic resource, which will help deepen and broaden the faith of all who are involved.' - Revd Canon ROBERT FREEMAN, National Evangelism Advisor, Church of England
'Here is a course that connects with where people really are rather than where the church thinks they ought to be. It will not suit everyone, but that is why it will prove valuable to many and particularly to those seekers after spirituality who have found the church unhelpful in the past.' - Revd DEREK ALLAN, Baptist Union of Great Britain
essence was compiled by ROB FROST who is a national evangelist and the leader of the annual holiday event 'Easter People'. His productions "Here and Now", "Hopes and Dreams", "Burning Questions", "Gospel End" and "Breaking Bread" have been seen by audiences totalling hundreds of thousands. Rob presents the Sunday Breakfast Show on Premier Radio.
